The NBA All-Iron Man Team

Kobe Bryant

If you’ve managed to miss the relentless flood of commercials — they were even on the ring posts during the Floyd Mayweather vs. Shane Mosley fight — you might not know that Iron Man 2 hits movie theaters nationwide today. (Seriously, the ads are ridiculous; we saw some Tony Starks-shaped donuts at a coffee shop this morning.)

When the first Iron Man came out a couple years ago, the Dime office was empty by mid-afternoon as everybody went to watch it. This might be another short Friday, too. But before everybody breaks out, here is our NBA All-Iron Man squad: Read More »

A.T.L. = Atlanta Takes L

Dwight Howard (photo. adidas)

Special shout-out to Dime reader Gunner J. Matthews for the Smack title, which was sent in right around the time the Hawks were getting the federal prison gen-pop treatment from the Magic in Game 1 of their series last night. Before tip-off, the NBA announced that 2012 All-Star Weekend will be held in Orlando. Then the Hawks celebrated by going on vacation … Dwight Howard posted 21 points, 12 boards and 5 blocks in the 43-piecing. Between alley-oops and spin moves on the block he dunked on just about everyone in blue, and Vince Carter (20 pts) even got some (barely) above-the-rim action … Read More »

Mo, Money

Mo Williams (photo. NBA)

Anybody who wrote off the Celtics as legit championship contenders when they were struggling through that middle section of the regular season shouldn’t be talking now. Although the C’s did lose in yesterday’s Game 1 of the conference semifinals to Cleveland, they more than proved they can run with LeBron‘s team and this won’t be an easy series … Rajon Rondo put up Deron Williams numbers in the first half alone, dropping 19 points and 8 assists before the break as Boston was in control. Rondo finished with 27 and 12, and did it on an efficient 7-for-10 from the field and 12-for-14 at the line. But he can’t hit a three, so he obviously stinks, right? … Anyway, the Celtics were up double-digits midway through the third quarter before Mo Williams went off. Read More »

2010 Winter Olympics – Team NBA

Kobe Bryant

“My enemies, they’re worried because I’m back. They’re afraid a little bit. … It’s a great feeling.”

I heard one of the world’s most dominant athletes deliver that line last night. Was it Tiger Woods? Kobe Bryant? Floyd Mayweather?

Nope. It was Russian figure skater Yevgeny Plushenko, the defending Olympic gold medalist who came out of retirement before these Vancouver Games and is sitting atop the leaderboard after Day 1 of the men’s competition. Read More »

Random Question Of The Day

Pac-Man (right)

Who would win in a fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather?

After Manny Pacquiao knocked out Miguel Cotto in the 12th round on Saturday night, it didn’t take long for everybody and their mothers to start talking about the person they’d like to see Pac-Man fight next: Floyd Mayweather. Manny has said all along that he wants a piece of Mayweather, but Pretty Boy Floyd has been hesitant to sign up. Many believe Mayweather can match Pacquiao’s speed, while others think Pac-Man has better footwork and more skill.

What do you guys predict would happen if they squared off in the spring?

No “Answer” for Kevin Martin

Kevin Martin (photo. Kelly Turso)

Allen Iverson made last night’s Grizzlies/Kings game worth checking out from the beginning, but Kevin Martin made it worth staying until the end. What was originally billed as A.I.’s big debut turned into K-Mart’s showcase, it may have been the best game of the season so far, and it was a hell of a timely ad for NBA League Pass as the free preview week wraps up … Checking in to a nice ovation from the Sacramento crowd, Iverson looked like he was just testing out his hamstring in his initial rotation, a scoreless five-minute stretch of the first quarter. NBA, The NBA's 30 Best Go-To Players / Oct 23, 2009 / 8:00 am

The NBA’s 30 best go-to players (#4: LeBron James)

LeBron James

Who do you want your offense to run through with everything on the line? Counting down 30th to 1st (one per team), I’ve ranked the League’s go-to guys…

*** *** ***

#4: LEBRON JAMES, Cavaliers

Under a different set of circumstances and a different kind of criteria, I could easily argue that LeBron is the all-around, pound-for-pound best player in basketball. In fact, save for the existence of one Usain Bolt, I could argue for ‘Bron as the top active athlete in any sport today. Read More »

“Jet” landing on Detroit’s head; Kobe Bryant owns Sin City

Jason Terry

Whether you’re spending your valuable TV time or your valuable ticket money, when you settle in to watch an NBA preseason game, you hope everybody — or at least somebody — on the court treats it like Jason Terry did last night. In the Mavs/Pistons game that aired on NBA TV, Terry almost had you thinking something important was at stake. It seemed at every dead ball he was trying to hype up the Dallas crowd, raising his arms and screaming or doing his little “Jet” dance, and then between the lines he was locked in like it was a playoff game.
