The Top 10 College Basketball Freshman Flying Under The Radar This Year

Ahmed Hill

Well guys its that time of year again, this time last year we brought you our first edition of our “Under-the-radar” list and we’re back at it again. Granted, this year doesn’t have a large load of potential number one picks that could cause a couple players to be lost in the shuffle, but needless to say there are some gems that are going unnoticed. This year features a crop of talent that will add to the overall depth of their respective teams, but over time turn into the role players that can help change the face of their programs. Meet the Secret Weapon That Could Bounce Georgetown; Derrick Rose’s Return is Up to Someone Beyond Him

amanda marcum

So how did you spend one of the greatest days of the sports year? There was wall-to-wall NCAA Tournament action from noon til past midnight on the East Coast and it seemed like more people than usual ditched work to disappear into bars to watch games (one of us even had a men’s league game at night where various members of the starting five showed up half in the bag – it did not go well) … But before we really get into yesterday’s action, you may be interested in the image leading off today’s Smack. College Super Tournament Of Nike Schools Is Close To Happening

Michigan State

Sixteeen Nike-sponsored universities from eight college conferences are getting closer to creating a branded tournament as a tribute to Nike co-founder Phil Knight in 2017, ESPN reported yesterday. The names, as expected, are some of the biggest headliners in college basketball — Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky included. Technically, it will be two eight-team tournaments because NCAA rules prohibit two teams from the same conference playing at the same regular-season tournament. Working around that means the party for Knight’s 80th birthday is ready to go, as long as it can find a TV partner (and ESPN is very interested). Read More »

We Reminisce: Georgetown Brawls With A Chinese Team

Missouri faced off against the national team of Netherlands on Saturday during a game of their exhibition tour, with Missouri easily outmatching the European squad by 25 points at halftime. The Dutch were understandably pissed, and started to take out their frustration on Mizzou with elbows, verbal exchanges and like. Except, unlike NBA refs who have quick trigger fingers and rarely let things get out of hand, these refs just couldn’t handle the mayhem. Missouri head coach Frank Haith had just been ejected for berating officials over a non-call on an elbow to forward Stefan Jankovic‘s head, so he decided to pull the plug. He and his players left the court, abandoning the game entirely. Read More »

We Reminisce: The First Meeting Of Allen Iverson & Stephon Marbury

Allen Iverson & Stephon Marbury

Amidst all this Rajon Rondo/Chris Paul hoopla today, I stumbled across some amazing footage of the first NBA meeting between Allen Iverson and Stephon Marbury. Both rookies during the 1996-97 season, you can understand the hype surrounding the No. 1 pick and No. 4 pick facing off – a game that didn’t occur until March 11, 1997. While this footage is great, it’s even better after watching A.I. and Steph battle in college. Read More »

Exhibition Between Georgetown & Chinese Team Ends In A Brawl

UPDATE: I figured it wasn’t this bad. But this video looks like complete chaos.

And you thought we would never see anything resembling the Malice at the Palace again. In what may turn out to be one of the worst brawls in recent memory, the Georgetown Hoyas left with nine minutes remaining in a tied game with the Bayi Rockets of China for fear of escalating danger. The game was physical right from the start, and with the Olympic Sports Center Stadium’s security doing nothing about it, the violence only worsened as the game neared its finish. Read More »

Dime Q&A: Vernon Macklin Talks NBA Draft & Billy Donovan

Vernon Macklin

After seeing limited action his first two seasons at Georgetown, Vernon Macklin thought it was time for a change. So he decided to transfer to Florida, and went on to average 10.6 and 11.6 points, respectively, in two standout seasons for the Gators. Now Macklin, known as a hustle player and the guy that gets the dirty work done, finds himself preparing for the NBA Draft. I had a chance to speak with him about his experiences the last few years and got his thoughts on the upcoming draft. Read More »
