Say what you will about the Heat’s rebounding problems against bigger teams such as Indiana this season, but the Heat’s turnovers are reliably the larger indicator for its wins or losses. That’s why its 102-89 loss to Indiana was a little worrisome even if LeBron (28 points) and Dwyane Wade (17 points) sounded afterward as if they’d just lost a charity game, insisting it’s no big deal at all. Boston rookie Jared Sullinger, whose stock recovered from one of the worst pre-NBA Draft falls to rebound for one of its most surprising seasons, is now out for the rest of the season after needing surgery on his back. Yahoo’s Adrian Wojnarowski broke the news and CBS’s Ken Berger has confirmed it. Barely a week after losing Rajon Rondo to torn knee ligaments for the season, Sullinger is gone, too. Read More »

With the midseason point approaching, it’s been interesting to see which rookies have been able to avoid that rookie wall so far. While January has been a hot month for some of the rookies, others have struggled. While Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Alexey Shved spent the majority of the season on the top half of our rookie ladder, others have outplayed them this month. Read More »

There was a lot of movement in the top 10 since our last rookie ladder. As the season picks up into high gear, few have been able to keep up with the pace. Guys like Austin Rivers and Kyle Singler have fallen off the radar while guys like Jared Sullinger and John Henson are opening eyes. Read More »

The Boston Celtics are the best mediocre team in the NBA. Certainly they don’t intend to hold that distinction come season’s end but right now that’s about the best they can muster. It’s hard to fathom how this team can lose by 20 to the Pistons and beat the Thunder a few nights later. The Celtics hope to be, and still have time to become an elite team in the league but they have had an inconsistent start given all the promise their roster showed on paper entering the season. The recipe for winning the NBA Rookie of the Year award is a mixture of ability and opportunity. A player has to demonstrate immense talent that then results in solid numbers to separate himself from the pack. Of course, in order to stand out as the best rookie in the league, the player has to be in a situation where he can get considerable playing time. All coaches deal with allocating minutes to rookies differently, so the situation has to be right for the rookie to get the opportunity to shine. Read More »

When most fans of the NBA think about reserve players, they think about the best sixth men. The role of the sixth man continues to grow as fans see guys like James Harden (pre-Houston), Jason Terry and Manu Ginobili “ball out” for their respective teams.
However, having super-subs doesn’t necessarily mean a team has a strong bench. Many times those elite sixth men primarily play with the starters, and don’t develop the same on-court chemistry with the other subs on the roster. Read More »
