The NBA season is just warming up, and like everything from Kobe‘s shooting percentages to Marcin Gortat leading the league in blocks, there are bound to be some statistical anomalies occuring out of sheer luck. Rudy Gay, I think we can agree, is one of the game’s best dunkers. On his huge fastbreak slam on New Orleans on Wednesday, another person who agrees is clearly Greivis Vasquez, who doesn’t want anything to do with a dunking Gay. While he ran under Gay, his teammate Jason Smith tried to challenge the dunk. He finds chasing Gay on a break isn’t the same as catching Blake Griffin, though. Derrick Rose isn’t the only NBA superstar who’s tired of the hard fouls and cheap shots. Blake Griffin was the notorious recipient of one of the worst fouls of the year – Jason Smith‘s attempted fast break murder from March 22 – and now the Clipper superstar is speaking out as well. At some point, you knew Griffin’s celebrity would come back to haunt him. DeMarcus Cousins doesn’t enjoy it, and neither do any of the players that have been publicly embarrassed by the most explosive player in the world. I just didn’t expect it all to happen so soon. Three-thousand miles away and two big games to start a Sunday afternoon. … Jeff Van Gundy isn’t coming through that door wrapped around someone’s ankle, and Allan Houston won’t be joining, either. Still, that can’t temper a playoff matchup we’d love to see that was previewed Sunday: Heat vs. Knicks. Chris Paul says the only people who hate Blake Griffin are the poor souls he’s dunking on. But if you were watching the March 22 game in New Orleans when Jason Smith, a virtually unknown player to the country at large, completely decked Griffin on the break, no one would’ve batted an eye if Smith came out later and said, “I HATE that dude.” In today’s NBA, that foul was equivalent to the 1984 clothesline of Kurt Rambis. Weekend Wonder: Kevin Durant averaged 33.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.0 steal, 2.0 blocks and 3.5 threes in two games over the weekend. He shot 58 percent from the field and 89 percent from the free-throw line, and averaged 2.5 turnovers per game in that stretch. I think we at Dime have some of the biggest Jason Smith fans in the world (I’m looking at you, Pat Cassidy.). Actually, let me re-phrase that: We at Dime might have the only Jason Smith fans in the world. But at least now, people know who he is. Last night in New Orleans’ upset of the Clippers, Smith body checked Blake Griffin on the break, was ejected and then walked off the court and through the tunnel celebrating and urging the fans to get louder. Beast of the Night: Paul Pierce finished with 25 points, nine rebounds, two assists, one steal, two blocks and three three-pointers last night. He shot 67 percent from the floor and 67 percent from the free-throw line, and had three turnovers. For the season, Pierce has maintained top 45 value, which is about in line of most owners’ expectations heading into the season. Read More »
