Kyrie Irving Learns About Celebrity; Rudy Fernandez May Sign In Spain

Kyrie Irving

It didn’t take Kyrie Irving long to learn about celebrity. He’s already filed a police report after being threatened by none other than Jessica Jackson, who happens to be Miss Hawaii. After they met briefly, Irving says the woman posted some YouTube videos and started going off on the No. 1 pick, and allegedly threatened to stab Irving … Read More »

Dime Q&A: Kyle Singler Talks NBA Draft, Duke & Trick Shots

Kyle Singler

After winning the national championship at Duke last season, many people expected Kyle Singler to take off for the NBA with his draft stock soaring. But the allure of the League couldn’t overcome the allure of returning to Duke for his senior season, which is exactly what Kyle did. Now, a year later, the tough, hard-nosed player from Medford, Ore. is ready to fulfill his NBA dreams. I caught up with Kyle at the Nets’ draft workouts this week and he talked about his draft prospects, Coach K and trick shots. Read More »

Now In The D-League, Jon Scheyer Is One Step Closer To The NBA

Jon Scheyer

Jon Scheyer played 144 consecutive contests for the Duke Blue Devils in his four years in Durham, so when he didn’t play a single game of basketball for 223 days, it got to him.

“I counted the days before I got back,” says Scheyer, who made his return Feb. 22 with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in the D-League after being sidelined with an eye injury he suffered playing for the Miami Heat in Summer League. And after watching him take the court, you could see that he was more than happy to be back. Read More »

We Reminisce: Jon Scheyer Scores 21 Points In 75 Seconds

Here’s all you need to know: Jon Scheyer scored 21 points in 75 seconds in front of 3990 fans. One of them just happened to be Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski. He finished the game with 52 points. High school basketball doesn’t get any better than this.

Duke’s Nolan Smith: “We’re not the defending champions”

Coach K‘s four national championship teams at Duke University have been defined by threes. Christian Laettner, Bobby Hurley and Grant Hill ran the show in the ’90s; Shane Battier, Jay Williams and Mike Dunleavy Jr. won it in ’01; and in 2010 it was Jon Scheyer, Kyle Singler and Nolan Smith.

With Scheyer gone to graduation and a few younger players taking aim at that vacant spot in the Big Three, this season’s leadership responsibilities for the Blue Devils (11-0) have fallen on seniors Smith (17.1 ppg, 5.4 apg) and Singler (17.0 ppg, 5.5 rpg) to lead a talented group aiming for a repeat. Going into tonight’s game against UNC-Greensboro (7 p.m., ESPNU), Smith talks about how experience wins championships: Read More »

Kevin Love is destined to play for the L.A. Lakers

Kevin Love

For certain sports franchises, players are not so much developed as they are born. Randy Moss was born to be a Raider (he just got there at the wrong time). Derek Jeter is a natural Yankee. Jon Scheyer couldn’t have played anywhere but Duke. Kevin Nash was the perfect fit for the New World Order.

The Lakers are one of those iconic franchises for which certain players appear destined to play. It may not happen on Draft Night — it may not even happen within the first 10 years of their career — but one way or another, he will eventually suit up for the purple and gold, and don the Sunday whites. Dwight Howard has been shooting every night in Orlando’s new gym

Dwight Howard

Every team in the NBA changed their uniforms yesterday. But before you go and start cleaning out the NBA Store for fresh throwbacks, just know it’s more of a performance material change. The League introduced its new unis yesterday in Manhattan, and some of the Dime crew was on-site. Dwight Howard, Brook Lopez, Wilson Chandler and Jordan Farmar were also in the building. Talking about his offseason, Dwight dropped a line that his fantasy owners will love: Read More »

Celtics and Heat gear up for 7-game showdown

Kevin Garnett

Apparently the Celtics and Heat are in a competition to set the record for having the most players in training camp and under contract. Yesterday the Celtics extended camp invites to Mario West (Hawks), Stephane Lasme (UMass), Chris Johnson (LSU) and Jamar Smith (Southern Indiana), bringing their preliminary roster count to approximately 47. It’s gonna look like ABCD Camp the first few days before Doc Rivers starts making cuts … With every new guy Boston brings in, Luke Harangody has to be getting more nervous. He’s likely going to be the slowest, least-athletic guy in camp, which is bad if you’re 12th in line, but worse if you’re 20th in line. Read More »
