The Great Point Guard Debate: The Best Of The Rest

Kevin Johnson

Over the past few weeks eight point guards took center stage to determine the best. The arguments were presented and I made my feelings known, but left you enough neutral data to formulate yours as well.

In the time spent researching these great players, some other players were seen and I want to make sure they are not overlooked. Some are champions of the record books and others are champions on the court. Either way, here are a few Golden Point Guard Nuggets of the past 60+ years. Read More »

Shaq Talks Back

Shaquille O'Neal

For those of you currently residing under a rock, there’s a lockout taking place in the NBA. According to Ken Berger from CBS Sports, the owners could possibly make a formal proposal to the players on Tuesday, September 13th. This would be the first proposal since June 30th and has the potential to make significant improvement in the current labor talks. Oh how lovely – a proposal. Well guess what, WE’RE NOT SATISFIED! In fact, were dying over here – sick to our stomachs. We’re tired of nba-players-going-overseas news. We’re disgusted that the most interesting news regarding any NBA player in-who-knows-how-long involves a Kardashian and a wedding. Read More »

What The NBA Finals And LeBron Taught Us About Life

LeBron James

Glance back at your childhood and your sprouting love for the game of basketball. Remember how you were too innocent, too inexperienced in anything to know why anything was good or evil, beautiful or ugly. Remember as a 4-year-old how this ill comprehension made you choose your favorite player, Kevin Johnson, for the simple fact that you shared a first name. That’s me. Read More »

Behind The Scenes At The NBA Draft Lottery

NBA Draft Lottery

Yesterday was one of my favorite days of the year. No, it wasn’t my birthday or the night I bet my buddy that Dirk Nowitzki would go H.A.M. Rather, last night was the 27th annual NBA Draft Lottery at the NBA Entertainment Studios in Secaucus, N.J. (And if you know me, it takes a special occasion to willingly travel across the river.) With Commissioner David Stern in the house along with representatives from the 12 teams in the Lottery, go behind the scenes to relive the experience. Read More »

San Antonio Suffers A Huge Loss; Deron Williams May Stay With Nets

Deron Williams

First the Lakers with Andrew Bynum and now this? The juggernauts of the West really should’ve just skipped the final few days of the regular season all together. Reports are now surfacing out of San Antonio’s camp that Manu Ginobili is doubtful for the first game of their series against Memphis with a hyperextended right elbow. An MRI yesterday confirmed the injury. During their game against the Suns on the season’s final night, Ginobili was running off a screen and tried to grab a hold of his own man to use his momentum to curl around. The problem was that Grant Hill was right behind him and sort of ran up his back, hitting him in just the right spot so that Manu’s elbow hyperextended. It wasn’t pretty. Read More »

Bidding Basketball: Kevin Johnson Figure & Brad Daugherty Pumps

Kevin Johnson

The NBA and adidas may have an exclusive merchandising deal, but the $400 million-plus agreement is definitely not respected on eBay. Even if the Association expands into Europe, Stern won’t be able to stop the movement of Bill Laimbeer video games, old Jordans and bootleg laundry bags from one fan to another. Then again, why would he? eBay’s stockroom beats any store’s, and a fan wearing a jersey is still a fan wearing a jersey. Stay tuned for a look at cheaper, misspelled NBA-related gems, as well as the expensive, hurt-your-feelings stuff. Read More »

10 Best NBA Teams That Didn’t Win a Championship

Karl Malone

With the beginning of every new NBA season, there are a few teams whom we consider to be favorites to win the championship. But as we all know, only one can be crowned NBA champions. And the teams that fall short go home forgotten and pretty much empty-handed.

Some people ask whether it’s worse to make it to the Finals and lose — to come so close to glory and not achieve your goal — or to get eliminated earlier on before the stakes get too high.

If you weren’t under a rock in the ’90s you know that Michael Jordan alone ruined the chances a lot of great players and teams to get a ring. Read More »

Derrick Rose: “Why can’t I be MVP?”

Derrick Rose (photo. Chad Griffith)

We’ve all read the book on Derrick Rose: If He Develops An Outside Jumper, He’s Gonna Be a Problem. (Foreword by Kevin Johnson.)

Well, D-Rose has apparently improved his shot over the summer — although he only hit 27 percent of his tries during the FIBA World Championship, he did look more confident and smoother taking those threes — and now he’s thinking in beast-mode. Read More »

The Warriors have the next Steve Nash on their roster

Golden State Warriors

Looking back, the depth chart of the 1997-98 Phoenix Suns at the point guard spot was crazy: Jason Kidd (starting), Steve Nash (2nd-year backup) and Kevin Johnson (combo guard near the end of the road). Now, all three have All-NBA credentials and at least arguable Hall of Fame potential, and at some point in their respective careers averaged 10-plus assists per game.

At the time, KJ had already left his mark on the game. And we knew J-Kidd was something special. The biggest surprise of the group was Nash, who would go on to win two league MVPs during his second career stint with the Suns years later. Read More »

1990′s vs. 2010 NBA Comparisons

Who is the new 'Zo?

As time passes, the faces change, but the game stays the same. As a result, it’s easy to notice similarities between NBA players from different eras.

The Golden Age for me as a basketball fan was the early-1990s. Those days were filled with a lot of up-and-comers with plenty of style like Shaq, Penny and Kenny Anderson. Add to that the stars from the ’80s like Isiah, Michael and Hakeem who were able solidify their careers and win the ultimate prize within that period, and a host of other memorable characters.
