Every year, some player slips through the cracks and ends up making a team after going undrafted. Recent examples of this trend are Jeremy Lin, Alonzo Gee and Samardo Samuels, players who have carved out niches in the NBA. These are the ten best undrafted players from yesterday’s draft. Hero Of The NBA Finals Must Decide Future Soon; There’s Another Unlikely Draft Promise

Dion Waiters

We can at least thank the lockout for this much: It pushed the season back and now that the Finals are over – even if they ended much quicker than any of us expected – the NBA Draft is literally right around the corner. And the first round promises are flowing. We already know about Dion Waiters. There are reports Royce White has one from the Celtics. Now, the agent for West Virginia’s Kevin Jones says he has a promise among the first 30 selections, that someone has committed to him in the first round. We can’t say we expected that. Jones was a solid college player, even if his numbers this year made him out to be a beast (20.1 points, 11.1 rebounds) but perhaps he turns into another Taj Gibson. Read More »

5 Players You Need To Watch In The 2012 NCAA Tournament, Part 2

John Henson

It’s tourney time, which means meaningful afternoon basketball between teams we pretend to know something about. I, for one, will openly admit that I cannot name a single player on Mississippi Valley State. I can, however, point you towards a few players to look out for in this year’s tournament.

On Monday, we gave you five players that weren’t necessarily from big-name schools, but are talented enough that you’ll be bound to hear their name at some point in the next few weeks. And that’s what it’s all about right? Getting that inside scoop to find the No. 12 seed destined for the Sweet 16 or that No. 14 seed with the best chance to pull off one incredible upset. You feel smart. You dominate your office pool. You get the girl. Everyone wins. Read More »

NBA Draft: The Lottery Pick You Haven’t Seen Yet

Hassan Whiteside at Marshall

Hassan Whiteside at Marshall

The NBA Draft is typically overstocked with two types of big men: (1) High-profile guys who went to high-profile schools and have teams just as intrigued with their potential as they are afraid they’ll be a bust, and (2) So-called “undersized” bigs who go underrated annually and have to prove themselves in an uphill battle from Day One.

Hassan Whiteside doesn’t fit either description. The 7-foot freshman was an unheralded recruit who burst onto the scene this season at Marshall, leading the nation with 5.4 blocks per game. Whiteside is projected to go anywhere from the Top-10 to later in the 20′s, but whichever team gets him, odds are their fan base won’t know anything about their new project. Read More »

Kevin Jones West Virginia Final Four Diary: The End of the Road

(All-Pro Photography by Dale Sparks)

West Virginia was two wins shy of a national championship. While that won’t be any immediate consolation to the players who worked all season to get to the Final Four, it’s a lot better than 300-something other D-1 teams can say. Kevin Jones was an instrumental part in the Mountaineers’ run, averaging 13.5 points and 7.2 rebounds this season. And in WVU’s four NCAA Tournament wins, the 6-8 sophomore forward was good for 15 points and 8 boards a game.

Kevin agreed to check in with Dime during the most hectic week of his career to give us a behind-the-scenes look at what it was like reaching the pinnacle of college basketball. After West Virginia lost to Duke in the national semifinal Saturday night, he reflected on the season and the Final Four experience: Read More »

West Virginia Send Off Rally Entrance Video

If you’ve been keeping up with Kevin Jones‘ Final Four Diary, then you might remember that he mentioned the send off they had before leaving for Indy. Well, we found it. Check out the entrance video for the team’s Final Four send off rally at the WVU Coliseum on Wednesday. Pretty dope.

The day after Christmas ’09, I watched West Virginia play at Seton Hall and get everything they could handle before narrowly edging a mediocre Big East opponent. West Virginia was ranked No. 6 in the country at the time and considered a national title contender, but I saw a team that might not have cracked the Top 20 four years ago.

But these Mountaineers aren’t playing against history; they’re playing the teams in front of them who are also part of the 2K10 version of college basketball. Read More »
