Mason Plumlee Handles Inane Question On Coach K Connection & Team USA

Mason Plumlee

Perhaps one of the more surprising members for USA Basketball this year, was Nets big man, Mason Plumlee. Some decided to shroud the selection in conspiracy, claiming Plum only made it because he played under Team USA coach Mike Krzyzewski while at Duke and also endorses Nike, who is the official sponsor and outfits the FIBA World Cup men’s basketball team. Kyrie Irving

And Kyrie Irving’s charmed offseason continues. After inking a max-level extension that cemented his status as a franchise cornerstone and watching as the previously woebegone Cleveland Cavaliers completed a wholesale roster overhaul highlighted by the addition of two of basketball’s best players, Irving has emerged as the likely starter at point guard for Team USA. Coach K: “You Don’t Replace Kevin Durant”

Kevin Durant

Team USA coach Mike Krzyzewski confirmed the notion that reigning NBA and FIBA World Championships MVP Kevin Durant is irreplaceable. And though Krzyzewski has an unmatched wealth of talent at his disposal to pick up Durant’s slack, he hardly preached optimism at the conclusion of USA Basketball’s first training camp practice from Chicago yesterday. Dime Q&A: Stephen Curry On Scalabrine’s Comments & Paul George’s Injury

Stephen Curry

It was hard for us not to ask Stephen Curry to pose back-to-back and see if maybe we had a fraction of an inch on him. We’re 6-3, but Steph seemed slightly shorter, even though his ropey arms, made taut with coiled muscles, made our reluctance to work out more obvious as our morning with him wore on. Perhaps that’s also why he was so easy to talk with, even after he’d gone through the paces a few times before chatting with Dime during a DEGREE Men event earlier this week. Read More »

Video: Coach K Does ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Mike Krzyzewski

Viral videos and memes are always annoying, but at least the #ALCSIceBucketChallenge is for a worthy cause. The seemingly idiotic videos dominating your social media feed in recent weeks of people dumping ice water on their heads are actually anything but, as evidenced by the surge in donations to the ALS Association. Even better than normal harmless, stupid fun to fight a debilitating disease? When people like Duke University and Team USA coach Mike Krzyzewski get in on the act. Read More »

Report: Mason Plumlee Likely To Make Team USA Over DeMarcus Cousins

DeMarcus Cousins, Mason Plumlee

Team USA tryouts have wrapped up after three days of scrimmaging and drills under the cool eyes of college assistant coaches and head coach Mike Krzyzewski. With Kevin Love withdrawing at the behest of Minnesota — though that might change — and Blake Griffin done after a small back fracture was discovered, it opened up a spot for Sacramento’s DeMarcus Cousins to earn a spot. Not so fast though, because Mason Plumlee might beat him out as ESPN’s Brian Windhorst notes. Read More »

Mike Krzyzewski: Derrick Rose Is “Better Than Four Years Ago”

Derrick Rose

The Other World Cup: USA Basketball and Total Global Domination

Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant (Geoff Burke, USATODAY Sports)

Team USA’s modest run through the FIFA World Cup in Brazil this summer was considered an unqualified success, despite accomplishing little more than merely surviving a brutal preliminary round only to be promptly eliminated by Belgium in the round of 16. When all was said and done, we were just happy to be invited to the party.

But that wasn’t the real story. The real story was that more Americans watched the 2014 World Cup than ever before, shattering previous television ratings. It was a resounding indication that America’s former reluctance to embrace the world’s most popular sport has since given way to unbridled enthusiasm. Read More »
