Can we speak on how Steve Blake dominated Tony Parker last night? Yes? That surprising turn of events was just a small part of a truly wacky game in Los Angeles. The Lakers beat the Spurs, 91-88, and are now just one win away (or one Jazz loss away) from making the playoffs. Dwight Howard looked like… well, someone who’d just been given his own team to control and lead. Read More »

According to the Oxford Dictionaries, a “journeyman” is known as “a worker or sports player who is reliable but not outstanding.” In the NBA, this title is used frequently to describe a player that has bounced around the league and struggled to find long-term real estate. While some of the NBA’s elite journeyman have put up All-Star numbers, they often have not received All-Star recognition. Read More »

When most fans of the NBA think about reserve players, they think about the best sixth men. The role of the sixth man continues to grow as fans see guys like James Harden (pre-Houston), Jason Terry and Manu Ginobili “ball out” for their respective teams.
However, having super-subs doesn’t necessarily mean a team has a strong bench. Many times those elite sixth men primarily play with the starters, and don’t develop the same on-court chemistry with the other subs on the roster. Read More »

We’re finally getting close to actual NBA basketball. After an eventful yet long and drawn-out offseason — apparently a lot of basketball writers grow quiet when they don’t have LeBron James to kick around anymore — training camps are already underway some teams and right around the corner for the rest … Word out of Boston is that Rajon Rondo has improved his jumper and that he will be more aggresive taking that jumper and looking for his own shot this season. Remember how Mike Miller came out of nowhere to hit seven threes in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, helping the Miami Heat finish off the Oklahoma City Thunder? Remember how Miller was literally dragging himself up and down the court all playoffs (and most of the regular season as well) due to back pain and other injuries? If you forgot, here is video evidence. Read More »

We can at least thank the lockout for this much: It pushed the season back and now that the Finals are over – even if they ended much quicker than any of us expected – the NBA Draft is literally right around the corner. And the first round promises are flowing. We already know about Dion Waiters. There are reports Royce White has one from the Celtics. Now, the agent for West Virginia’s Kevin Jones says he has a promise among the first 30 selections, that someone has committed to him in the first round. We can’t say we expected that. Jones was a solid college player, even if his numbers this year made him out to be a beast (20.1 points, 11.1 rebounds) but perhaps he turns into another Taj Gibson. Read More »

The accolades keep pouring in for the NBA champion Miami Heat. LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Mike Miller‘s Game 5 ghost and more partied till the break of dawn and then some on Friday morning. We even saw a photo with Wade’s shirt reading “Team No Sleep” and a photo of a 20-bottle sized super bottle of champagne. It was a celebration befitting a King, naturally, and a second day of coverage that echoed what we said here last night: Talk is cheap, but a title is tough. LeBron accomplished the second without much of the first this year, and it seems like most the fans and commentators are ready to forgive. Read More »

This is when we knew. Not when Mike Miller (23 points, 7-of-8 threes) was pouring threes in like a South Florida tropical storm. Not when LeBron James hung in the air for impossibly tough buckets, twice. Not when Derek Fisher‘s “flagrant” foul turned the tide finally in Miami’s favor. We knew this game had become Miami’s when LeBron gave Mario Chalmers (10 points, seven assists) a staredown during an incredible third-quarter stretch, up 25 points, to tell him Not now. Hold it in, and finish. Read More »

Russell Westbrook has heard it all. From analysts to other NBA players to wannabe coaches. Everyone has an opinion on how one of the NBA’s best young players should play, and it almost always differs from the hectic, erratic, aggressive style that seems to come so naturally to him. He might be one of the deadliest killers in the league, and yet people want him to change. Now, he’s hearing it from Dennis Rodman. Yep, the former NBA menace took a break from drinking Long Islands to add to the criticism of Westbrook in Game 2. Read More »
