Rookie defensive maven Nerlens Noel had himself a night. The future of the Philadelphia 76ers had 8 points, 8 rebounds, 5 steals, and 5 blocks in his team’s exhibition against the Detroit Pistons, showing off his wholly unique blend of disruptive tools. But you have to contest a shot to get a block or reach for a dribble to get a steal, and Pistons high-flyer Josh Smith caught a confident Noel going for the swat before taking full advantage with a wind-up lefty slam. Nerlens Noel

Rookie Nerlens Noel had 10 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and three blocks in the Philadelphia 76ers’ 106-92 exhibition win over the Charlotte Hornets last night. It was a strong performance by any box score or objective analysis. But what stuck out more to us than raw stats or a gravity-defying dunk or block about Noel’s play on Wednesday was a single defensive sequence that was easy to miss unless you were really looking. Reviewing The Sam Hinkie Era In Philadelphia

Sam Hinkie

It seems as though Sam Hinkie is almost done stripping down the team he took over after the 2012-13 NBA season. With Thaddeus Young officially traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves, the only player remaining on the Philadelphia 76ers roster, who was also on the roster when Hinkie took over, is — you guessed it — Jason Richardson. With Thad gone, it’s now official to say this is a Sixers team, with the exception of J-Rich, completely built by Hinkie, and it’s not a very good one, at least not yet. Read More »
