Happy Birthday Patrick Ewing!

So today on Twitter I asked what everyone thought Patrick Ewing was doing for his birthday tonight, and predictably, the most popular response was “Is the Gold Club still open?” Other highlights: “Traveling” and “sweating profusely.” All very appropriate responses. Ewing never won a title, and some will say he didn’t totally live up to the hype, but he still scored 24,815 points and pulled down 11,607 rebounds. Take him out of the equation and what do Knicks fans have from the past 20 years or so?

Miami: See You At The Crossroads

LeBron James

There’s only so long an NBA career can last and LeBron James has officially reached a crossroads. Yes, he’s only 26 years old and in his eighth season, but that’s almost a negative. How’s this all still going on? 11 points through 60 fourth-quarter minutes in the Finals. A lower scoring average than Chris Bosh in the biggest series of your career. Being thoroughly dominated and overshadowed by Dirk Nowitzki. Being outscored in a game by DeShawn Stevenson. Being guarded often in the second half of two games by a 38-year-old, 6-4 point guard and doing NOTHING about it. Read More »

Dime Q&A: Charles Barkley On Jordan, LeBron, Shaq & Gambling

Charles Barkley

Playing in the same American Century Celebrity Golf Championship as Jimmer Fredette, Charles Barkley heads into the tournament with 500-1 odds. Arguably the most entertaining basketball personality on television, Barkley has no reservations about speaking his mind. I caught up with Chuck yesterday to talk about Jordan, LeBron, Shaq, gambling and the looming NBA lockout. Read More »

Shaq: A Sit-Down With The Last Don

Shaquille O'Neal

For his first and only Dime cover story in Dime #38 (December 2007/January 2008), we wanted to get Shaquille O’Neal‘s take on his legacy, the new crop of NBA big men waiting in the wings and some of the most pressing issues facing the League, and basketball in general, at the time. I spoke to Shaq towards the end of the exhibition season one day after practice. His Heat squad was facing an uncertain future, knowing that Dwyane Wade would be out until at least mid-November, and the interview took place shortly before the team jettisoned Antoine Walker to Minnesota for Ricky Davis in an effort to keep afloat until Wade came back… Read More »

The 10 Greatest NBA Players With No Championship Jewelry

Allen Iverson

Dirk Nowitzki‘s scalding destruction of the Thunder last night was one of the best shooting performances in NBA history. It was so good, Dirk had people suddenly vaulting him into the discussion with the best players ever. While Nowitzki will ultimately be considered one of the 20 best players in the game’s history, he needs a capper. He needs that ring. That way when he walks into a room, Barkley and Malone and Reggie all have to shut up. Amazing right? Read More »

Clip of the Day: The NBA is FANtastic

One of our boys sent this over this morning and it’s pretty much everything you would want in a throwback ’80s video: Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, James Worthy, an incredible Bill Wennington mustache, lots of feathered hair, and a soundtrack by Hall & Oates:

New York Revival: Knicks And Nets On Path To Return To Greatness

Carmelo Anthony

Upon leaving New York City for All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles, we knew there was a very good possibility that either the Knicks or Nets would pull off a deal, most likely involving Carmelo Anthony. But what transpired last week for both New York teams (yes, the Nets will soon be in Brooklyn) has been nothing short of astounding. Read More »

Bidding Basketball: Old School Kicks From Shaq & Ewing

Bidding Basketball: Old School Kicks From Shaq & Ewing

It’s more than just Jordans. eBay’s strongest tie to basketball is not documented footwear, but an infinite inventory of NBA junk, official and otherwise, wearable or not. If it’s old and NBA, it’s worth watching. Keep checking back for the best in vintage NBA memorabilia around. This week, we have old school kicks from Shaquille O’Neal and Patrick Ewing. Read More »

Give Me The Damn Ball: 5 NBA Players Who Need More Shots

Pau Gasol

As much as the Denizens of Kobe Bryant‘s Crawl Space would like to believe their hero won his last two NBA championships “on his own,” the fact is that Pau Gasol was as important to Kobe’s fourth and fifth rings as Shaquille O’Neal was to Kobe’s first three pieces of championship jewelry.

As the Lakers have struggled recently in their quest for another three-peat, Gasol’s value is finally being realized. In a Dec. 28 loss to San Antonio, Gasol had only eight field goal attempts and scored nine points while Kobe jacked 27 shots. Read More »

Michael Jordan’s best (and worst) choices to replace Larry Brown

Michael Jordan

In his first nine months as majority owner of an NBA franchise, Michael Jordan has been through a few years’ worth of experiences:

He watched his Charlotte Bobcats make their first-ever playoff appearance, then watched them suffer their first-ever postseason series sweep. In free agency he re-signed a promising future building block (Tyrus Thomas), then let a potential All-Star point guard walk (Ray Felton). Now he has helped facilitate the departure of his team’s head coach, Larry Brown, meaning Jordan’s next big task will be hiring a replacement. Read More »
