With the NBA Rookie Photo Shoot taking place at the Knicks’ practice facility today, all of the rookies were in town for the festivities. So what happens when a bunch of 20 something year-olds have nothing to do on a Monday night? A video game tournament transpires. And luckily for them, EA Sports was in the house to hold them down.
After much deliberation, the eight-person bracket was filled out, and Dime was the only media outlet in the room (let alone a 30-mile radius) to watch it all go down. While one flatscreen had guys playing the new NBA Elite 11, the other one for the tourney was all about NBA JAM. Read on to see what happened. Read More »
While the free-agent pool is dwindling down, there are still many serviceable players available on the market. That means there will be many more signings ahead as teams look to fill out their rosters. Here are five signings that make sense for both the player and the team: Read More »
Who knew scouring another man’s day-planner could become so interesting? Thanks to a couple of (on the surface) small schedule changes, it’s now looking like LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh may be vying for just two open spots in Chicago … LeBron was supposed to meet with the Bulls and Cavs today, in that order, but reportedly switched it around to where he’ll meet with Cleveland in the morning and then Chicago. And as anybody who follows college recruiting knows, the team that gets the last visit typically has an edge. Meanwhile, D-Wade scheduled a second meeting with the Bulls on Friday, after having already met with them on Thursday. Bosh has been staying in Chicago throughout this early stage of free agency, so are we looking at a scenario where all three superstars have the Bulls on top of their wish list? Read More »
First impressions can be misleading if you don’t wait around for the conclusion. Ask anybody who’s been swindled by a con artist, or watched the promising first half-hour of Jeepers Creepers before enduring the colossally terrible rest of the movie. Ask Kobe Bryant after the first three quarters of Lakers/Celtics Game 7 before he took over the fourth: What you thought you saw at first can look completely different at the end of the day.
That’s what I thought when the dust settled and I realized what the New Orleans Hornets had accomplished in last night’s NBA Draft. Read More »
When you’re working out for NBA teams, it’s just as much about what you’re like on the court as you are off of it. So while we were at the Nets Pre-Draft Workout, in addition to getting up with Quincy Pondexter, we gave Tiny Gallon and Larry Sanders the chance to make their pitch about why the Nets would be an ideal fit for their style of play. Watch their responses above, and then read after the jump for Draft Profiles and more questions with both guys. Read More »
Every year now it seems that more and more players are leaving school early for the riches and fame that go along with playing in the NBA. Quincy Pondexter is not one of those guys. The 6-8 Pondexter stayed for four years at the University of Washington under coach Lorenzo Romar, playing the most career games in UW history, and becoming a likely first-round pick in the process. The day after Christmas ’09, I watched West Virginia play at Seton Hall and get everything they could handle before narrowly edging a mediocre Big East opponent. West Virginia was ranked No. 6 in the country at the time and considered a national title contender, but I saw a team that might not have cracked the Top 20 four years ago.
But these Mountaineers aren’t playing against history; they’re playing the teams in front of them who are also part of the 2K10 version of college basketball. Read More »
All week long, it seemed the media was trying its hardest to will Cornell to an upset win over Kentucky. But by the end of the first night of Sweet Sixteen action, Butler was the underdog stealing the headlines. While Cornell had a good 3-4 minutes of magic in their pocket before John Wall and the Army of Blueness proceeded to trample them, Butler neutralized No. 1 seed Syracuse’s athletic advantage and picked apart the infamous 2-3 zone in a monumental upset … Isn’t Gordon Hayward (17 pts, 5 rebs, 2 stls) overdue for the “next Larry Bird” hype that guys like Keith Van Horn, Wally Szczerbiak and Adam Morrison typically get around this time? Parity is real in college basketball. For the Dime editorial team, that was never more clear than a couple days ago when somebody pitched the idea that we make up lists of our Top-10 favorite players from each the Sweet Sixteen programs, and we quickly realized there aren’t that many tradition-rich options on the board. Ranking your 10 favorite Baylor basketball players would be like making an all-time Charlotte Bobcats team. Read More »
