Video: Missed Calls Hurt Both Teams In Game 6

Gregg Popovich

Patrolling an NBA game is a pretty unrewarding experience when you realize the only time an NBA ref’s name is mentioned is when they mess up. Some of the most ardent fans seem to think the fix is in. A ref’s unenviable existence is why it’s hard for us to really castigate them for these two missed calls in Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals. Read More »

Tim Donaghy Once Punched Joey Crawford In The Face

Joey Crawford

Being an NBA ref is a pretty thankless job. The public’s eye only shines after you mess up, and if anyone’s screaming your name in the arena, it’s usually prefaced with an inventive bit of cursing. This goes double for noted fan of the limelight, Joey Crawford, who appears to delight in his infamy. It’s a shame it was disgraced former referee, Tim Donaghy, who got to punch him in the face. Jeff Teague Hits Disputed Sideline 3-Pointer & Does MJ Shrug

Jeff Teague

Within the last three minutes of Atlant and Indiana’s Game 3 Larry Bird peeked at between his fingers, the Hawks’ underrated point guard Jeff Teague hit an off-balance three-pointer as the shot clock expired. It was a huge part of shredding the last hopes of an Indy comeback; except, Teague was also out of bounds on the play, which isn’t reviewable. Read More »

Kendrick Perkins & Z-Bo Ask Ref To Let Them Be Physical

Kendrick Perkins, Zach Randolph

So many people get nostalgic for a more physical NBA. Any time there’s a little roughness in the paint these days, you’re always expecting a whistle. That’s what makes this video clip before the Thunder and Grizzlies tipped off so enthralling. Watch as Kendrick Perkins and Zach Randolph ask head referee Monty McCutchen to let them be physical in the post. Read More »

Rockets Win Despite Dragic’s Career High & Uncalled Lane Violation

Dwight Howard, Goran Dragic

The Houston Rockets came back in the second half Sunday night in Phoenix to beat a Suns team they’re battling for playoff position with in the Western Conference. The win came despite a career high 35 points from Goran Dragic (from here on out, known simply as “Dragon”), and a late game lane violation committed by Dwight Howard that was missed by the refs during a free throw attempt. As the late Lefty Gomez says, “I’d rather be lucky than good.” Read More »

Were The Raptors Robbed By The Refs On Kyle Lowry’s Called Foul?

Kyle Lowry

This is almost a rhetorical headline because Kyle Lowry got jobbed Wednesday night by the refs in Sacramento. Trailing 105-99 with 28.5 seconds remaining, Lowry curled around the three-point arc for a look off an inbounds play. As his momentum carried him into the shot, rookie Ben McLemore was all over him. The shot fell and McLemore appeared to foul him on the attempt, giving the Kings a chance to cut the lead to one. Except, the refs called an offensive foul on Lowry. Read More »

Video: Joakim Noah’s “F—K You” To Every Ref After Getting Ejected

Joakim Noah

It’s not often you see someone as accomplished as Joakim Noah go crazy on the court. But after Noah picked up a second technical foul arguing a loose ball foul in Sacramento Monday night, he was ejected with seven minutes left in the third quarter. The moment he got the second technical, Noah flew off the handle and took the time to curse each referee out before retiring to the locker-room. This could be the first substantial fine of Adam Silver‘s new tenure as commissioner. Read More »

Video: Utah Jazz Bear Mascot Dances With Referee

Utah Jazz Bear

By now, most of you should be aware of Utah’s incongruent (at least to Utah) mascot, the Jazz Bear, who once antagonized an inebriated Rockets fan enough to get him expelled from the game in a hazy shround of beer fumes. Last night, during Utah’s surprising 118-103 victory over the visiting Nuggets, referee Mark Ayotte played right into the hands — literally — of the irascible Jazz mascot. Read More »

Video: Dwyane Wade Takes Seven Steps But Not Whistled For Traveling

Dwyane Wade

When the Heat played the Blazers on December 28 last year, the Heat escaped with a one-point victory thanks to 37 points from Chris Bosh, including a monster, game-winning three-pointer as time expired. Dwyane Wade chipped in 16 points (and three turnovers) for the LeBron-less Heat, but now we have video evidence, Wade should have had at least one more turnover after taking an unusual number of steps with the ball sans dribble, but without getting called for a traveling violation.
