The Houston Rockets came back in the second half Sunday night in Phoenix to beat a Suns team they’re battling for playoff position with in the Western Conference. The win came despite a career high 35 points from Goran Dragic (from here on out, known simply as “Dragon”), and a late game lane violation committed by Dwight Howard that was missed by the refs during a free throw attempt. As the late Lefty Gomez says, “I’d rather be lucky than good.” Read More »

Were The Raptors Robbed By The Refs On Kyle Lowry’s Called Foul?

Kyle Lowry

Kyle Lowry (Ed Szczepanski/USA TODAY Sports)

This is almost a rhetorical headline because Kyle Lowry got jobbed Wednesday night by the refs in Sacramento. Trailing 105-99 with 28.5 seconds remaining, Lowry curled around the three-point arc for a look off an inbounds play. As his momentum carried him into the shot, rookie Ben McLemore was all over him. The shot fell and McLemore appeared to foul him on the attempt, giving the Kings a chance to cut the lead to one. Except, the refs called an offensive foul on Lowry. Read More »

Video: Joakim Noah’s “F—K You” To Every Ref After Getting Ejected

Joakim Noah

It’s not often you see someone as accomplished as Joakim Noah go crazy on the court. But after Noah picked up a second technical foul arguing a loose ball foul in Sacramento Monday night, he was ejected with seven minutes left in the third quarter. The moment he got the second technical, Noah flew off the handle and took the time to curse each referee out before retiring to the locker-room. This could be the first substantial fine of Adam Silver‘s new tenure as commissioner. Read More »

Video: Utah Jazz Bear Mascot Dances With Referee

Utah Jazz Bear

Utah Jazz Bear (Russ Isabella/USA TODAY Sports)

By now, most of you should be aware of Utah’s incongruent (at least to Utah) mascot, the Jazz Bear, who once antagonized an inebriated Rockets fan enough to get him expelled from the game in a hazy shround of beer fumes. Last night, during Utah’s surprising 118-103 victory over the visiting Nuggets, referee Mark Ayotte played right into the hands — literally — of the irascible Jazz mascot. Read More »

Video: Dwyane Wade Takes Seven Steps But Not Whistled For Traveling

Dwyane Wade

Dwyane Wade (Steve Dykes/USA TODAY Sports)

When the Heat played the Blazers on December 28 last year, the Heat escaped with a one-point victory thanks to 37 points from Chris Bosh, including a monster, game-winning three-pointer as time expired. Dwyane Wade chipped in 16 points (and three turnovers) for the LeBron-less Heat, but now we have video evidence, Wade should have had at least one more turnover after taking an unusual number of steps with the ball sans dribble, but without getting called for a traveling violation. Referee Joey Crawford Almost Ejected A Ball Boy

Joey Crawford

The NBA’s second-oldest referee, 62-year-old Joey Crawford, has always been quick with a whistle. Whether he’s tossing Tim Duncan for laughing at him from San Antonio’s bench, or calling a sixth foul on LeBron James in a playoff game, Crawford won’t hesitate to send a player back to the locker-room. Even ball boys aren’t safe from the wrath of Joey. Read More »

Lance Stephenson Called For Laughable Taunting Technical

Lance Stephenson, Tony Allen

The Indiana Pacers are go 8-0 after beating their Western Conference doppelgängers, the Memphis Grizzlies. But it’s Lance Stephenson that’s the story. He put together a triple-double with 13 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds to help the Pacers win their eighth consecutive game to start the season. It makes Stephenson’s ridiculous taunting technical almost worth it, too. Read More »

Dancing Kyle O’Quinn Exposes Absurdity Of New NBA Rule (Gif)

Kyle O'Quinn

This season saw a number of new referee points of emphasis. The refs have been paying more attention to illegal screens (sorry KG), palming the ball and traveling — particularly after a pump fake. But there’s a new delay of game rule in place any time an offensive player touches the ball after it’s fallen through the twine. Orlando’s Kyle O’Quinn ran into this problem against the Celtics on Friday night, and his ensuing pirouette shows just how difficult it is for players to avoid the infraction. Read More »

Doin’ It NFL-Style: The Top 10 Worst Calls In Basketball History

Marcus Camby

The call/non-call/dual-call/what was that call? that ended Monday night’s NFL game in Seattle against Green Bay left everyone, to steal a line from the final decision, in simultaneous confusion. U.S. Senators have called for reviews, President Obama has weighed in and Tim Donaghy‘s cell phone has likely been blowing up all morning for journalists asking for his take on the whole thing. The Top 5 Referee Blow-Ups in NBA History

joey-crawford

You don’t have to have coached as long as Doc Rivers to know the simple rule for NBA officiating. If you criticize it, you’ll be fined by the league office. Everyone knows it, and every violator does it for effect. Can I get the refs’ attention before the next game? If I get popped for $25,000 or $35,000 for a comment, will that buy me some time in the refs’ ear next time out? Read More »
