The Jazz Will Reportedly Give Rudy Gobert Enough Money To Build His Own Eiffel Tower

Halloween was a relatively busy day of transactions around the NBA, mostly because it’s the deadline to sign 2013 draft picks to contract extensions. Earlier, it was reported that Thunder center Steven Adams was on the verge of becoming the league’s next $100 million man, and now, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical, it looks like the Utah Jazz are in the process of finalizing a deal with Rudy Gobert for a similar amount.

Now entering his fourth season in the league, the 24-year-old product out of France has quickly become one of the NBA’s premier shot-blockers. He averaged just over two blocks per game last season, to go along with nine points and 11 rebounds. With Gobert as their defensive anchor, the Jazz are hoping to make a return to the playoffs next spring.

The deal once again underscores the league’s current economic climate. It would’ve previously been unheard of for a player with Gobert’s numbers to command such a massive deal, but the skyrocketing salary cap has drastically altered the value of player of his caliber. In the case of both Gobert and Adams, their respective teams are compelled to lock them down now rather than risk losing them for nothing in free agency.

Whether they live up to those contracts is a different story altogether, but in both instances, it’s hard to argue against the logic of it.
