In what might honestly have been the most entertaining moment of the All-Star Celebrity Game in Toronto Friday night, ESPN anchor Sage Steele was forced to abruptly cut off Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler during his MVP acceptance speech for unexpectedly veering too far into dicey political territory. Here’s the full text of their interaction, via The Guardian:

Sage Steele: You know Kevin Hart has said he’s retired for 10 years and he keeps coming back so I feel like they’d welcome you back. Congratulations.

Win Butler: Thank you, I just want to say that it’s an election year in the US – [cue ESPN bumper music] – the US has a lot they can learn from Canada: healthcare, taking care of people, and I think …

Sage Steele: So we’re talking about celebrities and not politics. Congratulations on your MVP!

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who’s been paying attention to the self-proclaimed Worldwide Leader over the years. They’ve consistently shown that their number one priority is to avoid alienating the various people who write them checks, despite the moral and ethical implications involved.

On the other hand, if you’re Win Butler, it’s terribly presumptuous to think that a) this is the appropriate venue to deliver impromptu political commentary and b) people want to hear your rudimentary ideas on the geopolitical landscape to begin with (regardless of whether you’re a fan of his music).
