Report: “Baby Shaq” Starts Riot In The Stands After Fan Threatens His Family

Sofoklis Schortsanitis

Anyone here remember Sofoklis Schortsanitis? You probably should–not too many basketball players with the name Sofoklis Schortsanitis. You probably also know him as Baby Shaq, the guy who was once drafted by the Clippers after he destroyed Team USA with Greece during the 2006 FIBA World Championship. During a recent game between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Hapoel Tel Aviv, the 6-10, 350-pound big man ran into the stands to confront a taunting fan. His reasoning? Reportedly, the fan said he was going to rape his daughter. Read More »

Carl Landry To The Warriors; Nate Robinson Will Sign With Chicago

Nike Basketball Innovation: Deron Williams

Someone finally picked up Carl Landry. We weren’t sure what was taking so long, and why one of the stupidest front offices in the league (Charlotte) appeared to be the only team going after Landry. But at least the wait is over. Landry was considered the best unrestricted free agent still available, and despite that, he’s signing a very modest deal for two years and $8 million with Golden State. The second year is a player option, which means the power forward will almost assuredly opt out next summer to test his luck again (something Jamal Crawford did recently, and cashed in this summer with the Clippers). Gasol, Rubio face elimination at Worlds; Who starts for the Cavs?

Ricky Rubio

Everybody had the day off at the World Championship, as pool play is wrapped and we move to the knockout round. Today it’ll be Serbia vs. Croatia, and Spain vs. Greece in a matchup that is happening way earlier than anyone expected. After losing two games in pool play (to France and Lithuania), Spain can’t pretend like they haven’t gotten their wake-up call. Marc Gasol put up 25 points and 8 boards in what was basically a must-win against Lebanon, and is averaging 15.4 points and 7.2 boards in the tournament. Rudy Fernandez (shooting), J.C. Navarro (scoring) and Ricky Rubio (dishing) are doing their thing, and even Fran Vazquez showed up the other day (more than can be said about his Orlando Magic career). Read More »

Team USA’s unlikely hero; Sam Cassell returns for Team Serbia

Eric Gordon

It seems like the easier the opponent, the harder Team USA insists on making things for themselves. But at least they’re still winning, and usually by blowout margins. Yesterday’s World Championship matchup against Group B doormat Tunisia was supposed to be a harmless stomping — and when it was over, Coach K‘s team was up 35 on the scoreboard — but the lasting impression was that the most talented team in the WC field let a clearly inferior squad hang in with them for the entire first half (Team USA led by six at the break) and some of the third quarter before Eric Gordon (21 pts), Russell Westbrook (14 pts) led the bench mob in restoring order to the mismatch … Read More »

Carmelo Anthony pulling a Tiger Woods on the Denver Nuggets

Carmelo Anthony

By the time you read this, Carmelo Anthony may have been traded. At least that’s the vibe we’re getting from the reports surfacing around the League that say ‘Melo has made it very clear to the Nuggets that he has no intention of signing another contract with them and wants to be traded ASAP. One of our guys came up with a ‘Melo-to-Houston scenario that could work; what do you think of a Kevin Martin/Chauncey Billups backcourt? The Knicks, Magic, Clippers, Warriors and Nets have also been mentioned a lot … Read More »

LeBron’s Big Day

LeBron James

Now that those pesky NBA Finals are out of the way, we can get back to talking about LeBron 24/7. Still a week and a half away from the official start of free agency, LBJ might actually be trailing Dwyane Wade in terms of the crazy things people are doing to get his attention. In Miami, they’ve done everything but convince the retiree community to give D-Wade a portion of everybody’s social security and let him bat cleanup for the Marlins. Yesterday in Akron, they threw a “LeBron Appreciation Day” that became truly newsworthy when LeBron showed up unexpected … Read More »

Shaq looks in the mirror, dunks on his reflection

Nothing against LeBron and Josh Childress, but the unique selling point of last night’s Cavs/Olympiakos (Greece) game was Shaq vs. “Baby Shaq.” If you don’t remember, Baby Shaq is Sofoklis Schortsanitis, the big (6-9, 300-something) Tractor Traylor-looking dude who once upon a time gave Team USA problems but has since turned into the Blazers-era Shawn Kemp of the Euroleague, as his weight is a constant issue and sometimes gets in the way of his considerable skills … Big Shaq got the best of this one, putting up 12 points and five boards next to Baby Shaq’s four and five.
