As much as the Celtics and their 17 NBA championships have turned Boston, Mass., into a historic landmark in basketball circles — the Naismith Hall of Fame is in nearby Springfield — the city itself and the state of Massachusetts hasn’t really been known for producing home-grown ballplayers.

We Reminisce: Vintage Travis Best

While everyone talks about Kenny Anderson, Stephon Marbury and Mark Price when they discuss Georgia Tech point guards, they shouldn’t leave out Travis Best. The McDonald’s All-American nicknamed “The Springfield Rifle” was a high school phenom and beast at G-Tech, finishing as one of only two ACC players to score over 2,000 points and tally over 600 assists in a career. While his success never quite translated to the next level, Best found his niche as one of the best backup point guards in the League. Still playing overseas, I’d take him as my backup PG any day.
