Scott Marshall, the winner of Ink Master‘s fourth season, has been found dead in his Chicago hotel room at age 41. Marshall was known for his magnificent inkings of roses, dragons, and tribal designs and found victory in 2014 on the Spike TV program. He took the $100,000 top prize, but his true legacy will be found in his three children with wife Johanna.

According to TMZ, Marshall reportedly did not feel well on Saturday evening. He couldn’t make it home from his tattoo shop and popped into a hotel to recover. When Marshall did not answer Johanna’s calls the next morning, she phoned authorities. Her worst fears were confirmed when police officers arrived at her doorstep with terrible news. The coroner says Marshall’s death is “under investigation,” but initial autopsy reports indicate that Marshall may have suffered heart failure. An Ink Master representative spoke with TMZ to call Marshall “a great competitor and talented artist.”

Over at Inked magazine, Marshall’s former competitor, Matti Hixon, calls his pal “the best of the best as a tattoo artist and a person.”

Here’s Marshall’s award-winning inking of George W. Bush from Ink Master.
